Description
The OCC’s new and innovative educational pathway is designed to enable osteopaths to nurture, develop and enhance their specialist skills in paediatrics. Founded on our well-respected Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy, this newly developed pathway now includes two stand-alone 1-year courses which can be used to either start your journey in paediatrics or to build upon a journey that has already begun.
The pathway is designed with the flexibility to enable a postgraduate osteopath to structure their own learning journey; either following the courses sequentially and achieving a DPO in 2 years or completing them over a longer period of time.
The OCC Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO)
For those keen to further deepen their paediatric knowledge, skills, and application, this one-year course will build on the foundations established in the first year and take osteopaths to DPO level. Osteopaths will be encouraged to debate, discuss & challenge their paediatric & osteopathic thinking in clinic and via seminar weekends, and will be expected to actively participate in the development and discussion with their first year “certificate level” cohort. Alongside another year working in the OCC clinic, osteopaths will have the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the embryology, anatomy & development of a child into puberty and cover topics including prematurity, behavioural issues, the seriously sick child, enuresis, immunity & vaccination, orthodontics, the development of gait & scoliosis, hormonal & skeletal changes and how these impact the growing child and teen.
Diploma level course will include:
- Six weekend seminars
- 45 days in clinic with supervision, peer review and tutor review
- Attendance of tutorials to revisit subjects in more details, in the light of additional experience and understanding in order to consolidate
- DPO Skills log
- Case Reports
- Written papers
- Final Clinical ‘Observation Day’
Prerequisite Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) Level – successful completion of certificate level or other relevant post graduate course with demonstration of appropriate osteopathic skills, knowledge, and supervised clinical experience.
The Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) course is also suitable for osteopaths who have gained significant paediatric experience and knowledge and wish to further their understanding (Accreditation for Prior Learning). For example, an osteopath who has been in practice for a number of years, been mentored in clinic, or done various Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses in Paediatrics. Each applicant’s experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Accreditation of prior post-graduate learning will enable applicants, who have completed other relevant courses, to accelerate their path through one or both OCC courses.
Both courses offer opportunities for osteopaths to fulfil aspects of their GOsC CPD requirements.
As a world recognised learning institution, both courses offer an exciting opportunity for any osteopath looking to learn more about paediatrics within the nurturing clinic environment that is the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC).
